December School Happenings in Third Grade

It’s been a busy month for third grade students. In math, the students are using their newly learned multiplication and division skills to solve multi-step word problems.In science they are continuing the study of forces and motion. The students have begun their  study of weather and climate as it relates to informational reading and writing. They are also identifying non-fiction text features and their importance for a reader, and while doing so, are researching different weather phenomena and synthesizing the information into a well-developed writing piece. It has been a very fun and productive month for the students.

November Happenings in Third Grade

Third graders are strengthening their multiplication skills and developing their division skills in math. In writing, the students researched a habitat of their choice and used the information to assist in writing their own versions of “Magic Tree House” stories. In publishing their stories, students have learned editing and revising skills to make their writing better. Students have also begun small reading groups to address individual power goals, strengthening their reading. In social studies, the students just completed a geography unit, exploring similarities and differences of countries around the world.The class is also about to begin a science unit on motion and forces. 

October School Happenings in Third Grade

Third grade students are in the middle of their first social studies unit about geography.So far, they have identified the continents and oceans, various landforms and water features and different kinds of maps. Students have been developing good study habits as they have already prepared for some tests and quizzes.In math, the students are learning about multiplication, including patterns, properties, and strategies.As readers, they are now enjoying our second Magic Tree House whole-class book, which is giving them a chance to compare and contrast books in the series. Third graders will begin planning for their first writing project, where they will create their own Magic Tree House story.
