Parent's Guide to Raising a Reader

  1. Make reading fun!
  2. Reading to your child EVERY day!
  3. Be a reader yourself and model good reading habits.
  4. Visit the library frequently.
  5. Provide books that your child will enjoy and can read with ease.
  6. Encourage your child to read to you, but don't expect word perfect accuracy. Make sure what he/she reads makes sense.
  7. Before reading a book, encourage your child to look at the pictures and make predictions.
  8. When your child encounters a challenging word, encourage him to:
    • Use the picture and letter clues,
    • Substitute a word that would make sense,
    • Skip the word and read on, and/or
    • Reread the sentence again
  9. Afterwards, talk about the story and your reactions to the story.

April Happenings in First Grade

First graders have been exploring a genre study in reading and writing focused on school stories. Throughout the month, they have read various school-themed stories and identified key literary elements, such as characters, settings, problems, and solutions. They’ve been applying these elements to write retellings of the stories they’ve read.In math, the students use place values to compare numbers up to 100. They’ve also been practicing identifying numbers that are ten more or ten less than a given number and working on adding and subtracting tens.The students also took a wonderful field trip to the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center to see the performance ofMoon Mouse. This exciting show was a highlight for the first graders, who had a fantastic time.The students will also be celebrating Earth Day by learning about the importance of protecting our planet. They will participate in various activities focused on this special day.

March Happenings in First Grade

First graders are so excited to try to catch the Leprechaun and are busy making traps for the St. Patrick’s Day characters. In ELA, the students are reading a lot of stories and learning about the importance of characters and setting. In math, they are adding and subtracting tens. Everyone is also looking forward to a field trip to the PAC to seeMoon Mouse.

February Happenings in First Grade

February is filled with so many learning opportunities in first grade.The first graders started the month by making predictions whether the Groundhog would see it’s shadow. We eagerly awaited the answer.Guess what? Punxsutawney Phil predicted 6 more weeks of winter. Prior to celebrating President’s Day, the children are learning about the role of a President, the requirements to become President, and facts about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The students are excited to celebrate Valentine’s Day on the same day as P.S. I Love You Day.We recognize how important kindness is all year long.The first graders recently published nonfiction books about a variety of animals. The students worked cooperatively in research groups and determined many attributes about different animals. We completed the unit with a writing celebration.The children are eager to learn about a variety of different school communities in our next reading and writing unit.In math, the children are becoming experts utilizing a hundred twenty chart.The children are counting on and counting back by ones and tens. Math is always fun at first! We are very excited to share optional Black History projects that we are researching from home at the end of the month. We can’t wait to tell you all about them.

December School Happenings in First Grade

During the holiday season, first graders are learning about generosity and are showing acts of kindness for friends and family. The first grade holiday party is Thursday, Dec. 12 and the students are all very excited. First graders have become excellent researchers on wild and endangered animals in their writing and are continuing to strengthen their reading muscles every day. First grade mathematicians are also earning different ways to add and subtract in math.
